SINGAPORE -Gold edged lower in Asia Wednesday in a thin, nervous market with limited physical bids matched by profit-taking ahead of the U.S. Federal Reserve's monetary policy announcement.'It's just a few short-term players squaring up before the Fed meeting tonight,' said a Sydney based trader.There were few cues for precious metals, with the euro managing to hold above $1.40, Japan participants absent for a holiday and the focus firmly on the Federal Open Market Committee meeting statement at 1815 GMT.That the Fed will announce an extended quantitative easing program is considered a given, but after gold's 17% rally since late July, mainly on anticipation of further monetary easing, how much of an easing is already priced in remains unclear.'Some investors may be disappointed if the Fed does not embark on a 'shock and awe' approach. A rebound in the dollar could then exert downward pressure on gold and a sustained breach of $1,350 support could prompt a sell-off,' said Phillip Futures in a report.At 0655 GMT, spot gold was at $1354.40 a troy ounce, down $3.10 since Tuesday's New York close.Spot silver was at $24.81/oz, down 13 cents.Recent outperformer palladium was worst hit though, falling $8, or 1.2%, to $636/oz as investors decided to cash in on the 12% run up since its recent trough of $569/oz on Oct. 20.

TOKYO -Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (8306.TO) is in talks with the Royal Bank of Scotland Group (RBS.LN) to buy a portfolio of project-financing assets for about GBP4 billion, according to a person familiar with the matter Wednesday.Japan's largest bank is now negotiating with the U.K. bank and the U.K. government, which controls 84% of RBS's voting rights. A final agreement hasn't been reached yet, the person said.If the deal is completed, that would give the Tokyo lender an advantage of ramping up its project finance business by buying RBS's assets in railroad, energy and infrastructure.A spokesman for MUFG declined to comment and the Royal Bank of Scotland wasn't immediately available for comment.The move underscores how Japanese banks are aggressively pursuing overseas opportunities for further growth amid a shrinking population and sluggish lending at home.MUFG, who has about a 20% stake in U.S. Morgan Stanley, has made its intentions clear about expanding abroad through acquisitions.In an earlier interview, a senior executive of MUFG's banking unit said the bank is on the prowl for another acquisition in the U.S. to become a top 10 commercial bank in the country, adding to its wholly owned unit, California-based Union Bank. HONG KONG -The HSBC Hong Kong Purchasing Managers Index rose to 53.0 in October from 52.8 in September on continued growth in new orders, particularly from mainland China, indicating buoyant business conditions in the city, HSBC Holdings PLC said Wednesday. A reading above 50 indicates an expansion in manufacturing activity, while a reading below 50 indicates contraction. The HSBC Hong Kong PMI is derived from indexes measuring changes in output, new orders, employment, suppliers' delivery times and stocks of goods purchased. HSBC usually issues the index, which is based on a survey of more than 300 companies in the city, within the first three working days of every month for the previous month's data.

WASHINGTON -President Barack Obama warned voters heading to the polls Tuesday that GOP victories could hurt White House efforts to build on policy gains made in the past two years.Obama, speaking in an interview with Los Angeles radio station KPWR, said addressing high levels of unemployment and increasing access to education remain top White House priorities. The ability to accomplish those goals will depend on whether voters who supported him in 2008 turn out and support candidates who back the White House, he said."We have done a lot of things over the last two years in the midst of crisis," Obama said. "This election is going to be the point where we decide whether we can keep on moving forward with this change."Obama's remarks come as voters across the country vote in mid-term elections widely expected to result in Republicans taking back control of the House of Representatives, as well as make gains in the Senate. Democrats have found it difficult to gain traction with voters still dealing with an uncertain economy with the message that things are improving.Obama acknowledged that job growth is slower than it needs to be, and said policy makers "need to start creating new job opportunities."
